How to configure On-prem MS Hyper-V for Metallic backup

If you want to back up on-premises Hyper-V servers, verify that your environment meets the requirements.

To backup on-premises data, a backup gateway is required. To review the requirements for the backup gateway, see Metallic Backup Gateway.

Hyper-V Deployment Model

To back up Hyper-V virtual machines, install a Metallic backup gateway for Hyper-V on at least one Hyper-V host in the cluster. The Metallic backup gateway for Hyper-V communicates on TCP port 443 with the Metallic backup services that are hosted in the cloud and with the Metallic backup gateway.

Best Practice: For the best backup and recovery performance, install the Metallic backup gateway for Hyper-V and the Metallic backup gateway on the same local network. Using this configuration, options for both local and cloud backup copies are available.

Authenticating to Hyper-V

  • Obtain the user credentials to access the Hyper-V server from your Hyper-V administrator. The user must be part of the following administrator groups on the Hyper-V host:

    • Local Administrators group (for Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 and Hyper-V Server 2016)

    • Any user that are part of Hyper-V Administrators group (for Hyper-V Server 2012 and 2012 R2)

    • For a Hyper-V cluster, the user account must have full Cluster Permissions (Read and Full Control).
